Evolution of unstable and stable biparental care

چکیده

Evolutionarily stable strategy models suggest that biparental care will be stable when parents partially compensate for changes in care by the other parent Previous work has emphasized the relationship between parental expenditure and the current component of fitness (e.g., offspring survival and fecundity) in causing partial compensation. This study shows that partial compensation depends critically on the effect of current parental expenditure on a parent's future fitness (e.g., survival to and fecundity in subsequent breeding seasons). Partial compensation is favored and biparental care is stable when future fitness is a concave-down function of expenditure (i.e., each increment of expenditure is more costly than the previous). However, when future fitness is a convex-down function of expenditure (i.e., each increment of expenditure is less costly) biparental care is unstable.

Biparental Care in Insects: Paternal Care, Life History, and the Function of the Nest

The evolution of parental care is a complex process, and many evolutionary pathways have been hypothesized. Maternal care is common, but paternal care is not. High confidence of paternity should favor the evolution of paternal attendance in caring for young; biparental care is rare because paternity assurance is typically low compared to maternity. Biparental care in insects has evolved several...

Why does it take two to tango? Lifetime fitness consequences of parental care in a burying beetle

In species that require parental care, each parent can either care for their offspring or leave them in the care of the other parent. For each parent this creates three possible parental care strategies: biparental care, uniparental (male or female) care, and uniparental desertion by either the male or female. The burying beetle, Nicrophorus orbicollis, typically exhibits biparental care of off...

A key ecological trait drove the evolution of biparental care and monogamy in an amphibian.

Linking specific ecological factors to the evolution of parental care pattern and mating system is a difficult task of key importance. We provide evidence from comparative analyses that an ecological factor (breeding pool size) is associated with the evolution of parental care across all frogs. We further show that the most intensive form of parental care (trophic egg feeding) evolved in concer...

Repeated Parallel Evolution of Parental Care Strategies within Xenotilapia, a Genus of Cichlid Fishes from Lake Tanganyika

The factors promoting the evolution of parental care strategies have been extensively studied in experiment and theory. However, most attempts to examine parental care in an evolutionary context have evaluated broad taxonomic categories. The explosive and recent diversifications of East African cichlid fishes offer exceptional opportunities to study the evolution of various life history traits ...

Paternal care and litter size coevolution in mammals

Biparental care of offspring occurs in diverse mammalian genera and is particularly common among species with socially monogamous mating systems. Despite numerous well-documented examples, however, the evolutionary causes and consequences of paternal care in mammals are not well understood. Here, we investigate the evolution of paternal care in relation to offspring production. Using comparativ...
